Stephen Hegarty

Lead Scientist

Stephen P. Hegarty joined the Cork Institute of Technology as a Senior Lecturer in 2014. He obtained both his B.Sc. in Science and his Ph.D. in Physics from University College, Cork. In 1998 he joined Corning Inc., at Corning, NY as a Senior Development Scientist working on novel fibre optical amplifiers for telecommunications. He left Corning to join Optimight Communications of San Jose, CA as a Senior Optical Engineer, working on ultra-long-haul high capacity systems. In 2002 he re-joined University College, Cork largely based in the Tyndall National Institute. Dr. Hegarty’s major research interests are semiconductor laser dynamics and laser sensor systems where he has made significant contributions in both an academic and industrial setting.
